Background

Dr Jorge Casal is Senior Investigator of the Scientific Career of the National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET), Professor of Plant Physiology at the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Buenos Aires and head of the Laboratory of Plant Molecular Physiology at Leloir Institute. Jorge obtained his PhD at the School of Biological Sciences of Leicester University, UK in 1989. Shortly after, he obtained a permanent position at IFEVA, an institute owned jointly by CONICET and University of Buenos Aires, where he became a professor in 2009. He has made major contributions to our understanding of perception and transduction of signals from the light environment by plants, including system-level analysis of the signalling network that mediates plant responses to shade. With these studies he provides an intuitive way to conceptualise the signalling downstream photosensory receptors that are prevalent in multiple aspects of plant physiology. Jorge has demonstrated how genetic relatedness amongst plants determines leaf orientation when growing close to one another, a discovery with great impact in agriculture. More recently, he discovered that the light receptor phytochrome B also acts as thermosensor. Jorge has been Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow and has received the Georg Forster Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation.
