Youngsook Lee is a Professor in the Department of Life Science at Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea. She has a background in plant physiology and cell biology having trained first at the Seoul National University in South Korea, and then at University of Connecticut and the University of Harvard in the USA. On her return to Korea, she started working on ABC transporters, with the aim of identifying ABC genes important for detoxifying xenobiotics. Her research team identified the functions of many ABC transporters in plants, including those for plant hormones ABA and cytokinin, and transporters for heavy metals. During her career, Youngsook has received extensive recognition for her achievements, including the L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science award (2008), the Cozzarelli Prize from the National Academy of Science, USA (2010) and the Korea Scientist prize from the National Research Foundation of Korea (2018). As of 2018, Younksook is also an editor on the board of New Phytologist.
